Yoko Ono has a new neighbor in Dakota.
An apartment directly next to the artist’s house and the peace activist, and the old residence of the late John Lennon, has sold $ 6.2 million, according to the publication.
According to Street Records, the co -operative of 2.5 bars of four bedrooms reached the market in June 2024 and sold for its requested price, marking a rare transaction within the famously adjusted building upper West Side on 1 W. 72nd Street.
“The apartment is a work of art and received multiple offers,” he told The Daniela Kunen of Douglas Elliman, who celebrated the list.
The residence of the seventh floor belonged to the late Paul H. Epstein, a prominent copyright lawyer, whose list of clients included cultural luminaires Leonard Bernstein and Rodgers and Hammerstein, both figures of 20th-century American music. The late Bernstein was also a resident of Dakota.
Epstein bought the unit in 2012 with her husband, Garry Parton, and lived there until his death in 2022 at the age of 81.
The new buyer has not yet identified.
The design of the house reflects the grandeur of the building’s signing, with 13 -foot ceilings, ornate wainscoting, five fireplaces and a formal gallery that unfolds in eight graceful rooms.
Currently, a library staged as a dining room contains a discrete wet bar and the views of Windows Frame from the Internal Courtyard of Dakota and the rooftops of the UPper West Side.
Despite its age, the building was completed in 1884 by the architect Henry J. Hardenbergh of the fame of the Hotel Plaza, the Dakota is still one of the most exclusive and culturally charged addresses in the city.
Ono first moved to the building in 1966 and remained there after the 1980’s Lennon assassination outside its main entrance. While now speaking most of the time on a farm of 600 hectares in Franklin, New York, their presence and legacy are still integral to the mystique of the cooperative.
At one point, she and Lennon occupied up to five units in the building, using the space for life, storage, guests and ono study.
This sale is only the second in Dakota this year, after the sale of the house of the missing Ilon Specht in February for $ 8.1 million. Specht was a pioneer for women in advertising, after writing a commercial television success for the favorite hair color in 1973. He died in May 2024 at the age of 81 from endometrial cancer complications, according to the New York Times.
In the meantime, there is only one unit of the building currently on the market: a five -bedroom residence of eight bathrooms, which is $ 17.5 million. It was initially listed for $ 19 million by 2024.
Although it does not have modern comforts such as gyms or lounges, which have been demanded for years today, Dakota has been offering something that few others can: a living story.
The Dakota “does not need to appeal to everyone”, the architectural historian Scott Cardinal told The Post earlier. “Everything you need is 100 people who think it’s impressive. I don’t think you ever have trouble finding people.”
